Winter Sailing at Elephant Butte Lake; Jan 2012
The Rio Grande Yacht Club in New Mexico organizes racing through spring, summer, fall and winter, as well as year-round social events and occasional overnight “raft-ups” and club cruises. New Mexico offers a range of sailing conditions, from the strong spring winds, the light summer breezes and the glorious fall and winter. Sailing in short sleeves, in a nice breeze on Elephant Butte lake in January, would be the envy of sailors across the continent, if only they knew about it. The RGYC comprises sailors from New Mexico, west Texas, and beyond. Most of our sailing and racing is at Elephant Butte Lake, about 130 miles south of Albuquerque, straight down the 75 mph I-25 (see map below). In summer months, some of us sail up at Heron lake, 3 hours northwest of Albuquerque. The club is home to around a hundred couples and individual club members. Elephant Butte lake is served by three marinas offering a range of facilities including launching ramps, mast-cranes, a "mast-up" storage facility, differing types of mooring, slips with shore power, bathrooms, small convenience stores, and a seasonal restaurant at the Damsite Marina (see links in sidebar for details). Our purpose is to provide safe, organized, sailing for residents of New Mexico, west Texas and the surrounding areas, and to stimulate a greater awareness and interest in sailing by conducting races, cruises, and training in sailing skills and boating safety. New members, boat owners, and willing crew of all ages and experience, are always welcome! Contact Webmaster, or membership@rgyc.net for further details. This website is under construction, and being expanded, to provide a glimpse into the joys of year-round sailing on our beautiful lakes in the middle of the desert.

RGYC's 2012 schedule of events can be seen here.
